possible treatments
Filling or crown?
Depending on the extent of the fracture, a possible treatment is a filling or a crown. We will always offer the most conservative treatment to our patients. In some cases, a regular filling may suffice. More commonly, we see extensive fractures that require a crown. A crown, aka "a cap", involves removing a thin layer of tooth structure all the way around your tooth. Then we can cement a porcelain cap over your tooth to prevent further fracture. Â
Do I need a root canal, too?
Not necessarily.  If the crack extends to the inner part of the tooth, it may have caused irreversible damage to the nerve inside of your tooth. In this case, you would need a root canal if you want to save the tooth. A root canal is when the dentist removes the nerve from your tooth. Our dentists will evaluate your xrays and may perform some simple clinical tests to determine if you need a root canal.  A root canal is usually followed by doing a crown on the broken tooth.Â
Do you have to pull my cracked tooth?
If your tooth crack extends to the roots of the tooth, it may not be restorable.  The broken tooth will need to be extracted. But don't worry! We offer lots of options at our office to replace a tooth. Â
